May Herb Walks

Sign up for a fun and engaging herb walk at Glen Canyon Park with clinical herbalist Sarah Jane Fairless! This walk will last approximately 2-2.5 hours and include medicinal plant identification, current and historical usage information, and more.

We will be walking very slow with lots of stops, but there will be hills and stairs. 

Two dates available: Sunday May 7th and Saturday May 13th

Herb walks start at 10am

Cost is $15 per person

Space is limited to 12 people per date to allow easy navigation of tight trails and hearing. 

Well behaved children over 10 are allowed, but will need their own ticket. 

You will receive an email with meet up details prior to this event.

Walks will be rescheduled if inclement weather prohibits.

A minimum of 5 attendees is required to run each walk.

Refunds will be given promptly minus processing fees if the date is cancelled.

Winter is a time of retreat and entering into the big dream. Just like the plants, our energy moves inward to build the foundation for a healthy and productive year ahead.

No one can deny the fortifying and rejuvenating power of a good broth! Broths are easy-to-digest liquid gold that hydrate and provide dense nutrition and immune system support, while allowing the body to redirect energy towards recovery and rest. In this class we discuss the best methods for preparing both bone broth as well as vegan recipes.

We will cover which herbs make great additions, their medicinal benefits, as well as how to formulate for flavor and potency. Sarah Jane will demo her favorite way to make broth in class.

We invite students to save in-advance their veggie scraps and bones (if you'd like) to make their own medicinal broths at home!

We can forage in your spice rack, fridge, or grocery store for herbal additions you likely already have access to.

We will also discuss herbs and bodywork techniques for enhancing sleep and staying warm - plus instructions on how to make a potent and fun herbal dream pillow. Join us for this cozy class and start getting "stocked" for the season!

A list of suggested supplies will be provided in advance of class.

Students will receive a quick reference guide for all recipes and instructions.

Botanicals For Animals: A Two Part Series

This 2 part class series will explore using plant medicine to help our furry friends live their best lives while empowering herbally inclined folks to take an active role in supporting the health of their pets! In this class, we will go over which herbs are best for general well-being and common issues that often occur. Students will learn to identify signs and symptoms of illness in their four-legged companions and build confidence to use herbs safely.

We will discuss proper dosage and delivery methods that work well for ease of treatment and ensuring compliance. You will learn how to make a nutritive and herb-infused sprinkle that pets love! You will also receive a quick reference guide of 30 herbs and their uses with contraindications to make giving your little buddy plant medicine a breeze. This class is suitable for beginners and herbalists of all levels.

Medicine of the Season: Herbal Support for Autumn Health

Celebrate the transition from the long days of summer into the golden hours of fall! Together we embrace the lengthening shadows and the bounty of harvest season by learning about plants and techniques to support our lung health and stay juicy. This time of year often brings about wildfires, colds and flu, and just general dryness and fatigue as we start to wind down from the frenzy of summer.

In this class we continue to practice grocery-store herbalism, exploring our spice rack for herbal support, and creating a delicious squash-based dish with unique medicinal properties to nourish and build autumn resilience.

Learn the best ways to infuse oil and make a luxurious and hydrating blend for skin health. This class is a combination of lecture and hands-on learning.

A brief shopping guide will be provided in advance for those that want to participate in class. Students will receive a quick reference guide for spice rack medicine!

Join us to discover how to support yourself and your community as we move through the seasons with the support of herbal medicine, recipes, bodywork, and attunement to seasonal plants.

Living in harmony with earth rhythms helps us to optimize our health by understanding how the shifting elements and environment affects our bodies and spirits. We will learn how to work with the medicinal plants that just happen to grow and show up right at the time when we need them! Working with seasonal healing practices helps us to gracefully transition into each new cycle of the year, while minimizing the discomfort or illnesses that can arise when we are out of balance.

Each class will incorporate a live medicine-making demo, accessible kitchen recipes, bodywork practices, and a seasonal grocery store shopping list – think grocery store herbalism!

We will discuss optimal herb choices for body systems, plus herbal application methods, specifically attuned to the time of year.

This class is a four part series, you can also sign up for the session of your choice! Spring session will be held April 20th. Summer session will be held on July 7th. Fall Session will be October 13th. Finally, winter session is on January 12th. All classes will be on Zoom with video replay available.

Medicine of the Season: Herbal Support for a Vibrant Summer

Summer is a time of expansion, outward moving energy, increased social engagement, and getting into the great outdoors. With all of this increased activity and warmth, we can get a little overwhelmed, ungrounded, and overheated. In this class we will discuss ways to stay calm and collected using seasonal herbs, foods, and practices for grounding, cooling, and nervous system support. Together we will create a flavorful fermented beverage incorporating fruits and herbs easily found at your local grocery store: think summertime herbal cocktails.

You will learn how to make Sarah Jane’s favorite herbal electrolyte mix. We'll also incorporate timeless body-based techniques to soothe the heart and mind.

This class is a combination of lecture and hands-on learning. A brief shopping guide will be provided in advance for those that want to participate in class. Students will receive recipe cards for all projects!

Medicine of the Season:Herbal Support for Springtime Health

APRIL 20th 6-8pm PST

Together we celebrate vernal vitality! In this session we focus on how to transition from the slow and stagnant energies of winter by supporting the body systems of our liver and lymph. Spring greens such as nettle and chickweed arrive to aid us in getting our juices flowing and helping our bodies adapt to seasonal struggles - can you say allergies?!

Sarah Jane will demo some recipes using our leafy green plant friends. Learn to make a DIY digestive bitters formula using ingredients that you can easily find in your grocery store or spice rack. We’ll also incorporate body techniques to revive our detoxification pathways. This class is a combination of lecture and hands-on learning.

A shopping guide will be provided in advance for those that want to participate in class.

This class is part one of a four part series: sign up for just one session or opt in for all four at a discounted price!

Suggested supplies:

For bitters: An 8-16oz glass jar with a lid. 1-2 cups of vodka or brandy or apple cider vinegar if you want to make a non alcoholic version.

A cutting board and knife.

We will send out a brief grocery store list for 1-3 items in advance of class and will also be investigating your spice rack for additional possibilities.

Wild Healing Broths for Winter

In this workshop, we explore the world of herbal electuaries!

An electuary is a tasty and timeless way to incorporate medicinal herbs into your daily life and can make even the most resistant palette a willing participant. Together we'll create a delicious and immune-supporting golden milk electuary using things you most likely already have in your spice rack.

We discuss the various ways to prepare, recipe ideas, how to formulate, and the medicinal value of the herbs we are using.

Prepare for Fall by making this warming and cozy treat while also taking a peek into what the SOTHA Community Herbalist training program has to offer!

This class is suitable for beginners and herbalists of all levels and is an introduction to what the SOTHA Herbalist Certification will dive into.

The Kitchen Apothecary : Food As Medicine. Join local clinical herbalist Sarah Jane Fairless to learn how to use foods and herbs to stay healthy during these uncertain times. Plant medicine is an incredible resource for helping to prevent infection and supporting the immune system. You likely have many of these helpful allies in your kitchen already! This class will be a combination of lecture and hands-on medicine making. We will discuss easy preparations and techniques for various symptoms and prevention, which herbs are appropriate, and what foods are best for nourishing the body to stay resilient and feeling well. Together we will create a fiery traditional recipe using culinary herbs and spices, and a delectable medicinal mushroom pate. 

This is a live, hands-on cooking class held online via Zoom. Class is limited to 12 students to create an interactive, dynamic experience. The Instructor will be assisted by a remote 18 Reasons staffer who will facilitate conversation during class and ensure all students are attended to. We will be recording the class and we hope to make the recording available to students after an editing process to protect the privacy of our students’ homes.
